Pet Dentistry

Your Pet’s Smile Is Our Priority

At Eno Animal Hospital, we understand your pet is more than just a companion. Your pet is a cherished member of the family. We’re here to ensure your fur baby enjoys a happy, healthy life free from the pain of dental disease.

We’re proud to offer comprehensive pet dentistry that prioritizes oral health and overall wellness. Dentistry is one of our most important services.

Details on Dental Disease

Pet dental disease is extremely common. There are four stages—or scores—of dental disease, in increasing seriousness and danger.

Happily, stages 1 and 2 are reversible. Stages 3 and 4 are more severe and often require surgery to extract diseased teeth.

We take dental disease seriously. It can cause immense suffering and, if left untreated, have life-threatening consequences. The good news is we have the power to prevent and even reverse early dental disease with professional dentistry.

Read our blog for more details on dental disease and what you can do to prevent it at home.

Signs Your Pet Needs Professional Dentistry

Bad breath is often the first and most noticeable sign of dental disease. Any of the following signs also indicate your pet needs help…

  • Discolored teeth with tartar build-up
  • Loose, broken, or missing teeth
  • Excessive drooling
  • Nasal discharge
  • Bleeding gums or bloody saliva
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Sensitivity to touch around the mouth
  • Dropping food
  • Difficulty eating, refusing to eat, or favoring one side of the mouth

Pets are experts at hiding pain. If you observe any of these symptoms, or even have a suspicion, it’s time to call us.

What to Expect During Professional Dentistry

The practice of professional dentistry includes dental cleaning and dental surgery, depending on how advanced the dental disease.

Annual dental cleanings help prevent dental disease from developing at all. Dental cleanings can also reverse dental disease at the earlier stages.

We hope your young pet joins the Eno Cleaning Club!

During a professional dental cleaning, our highly trained assistants thoroughly examine your pet’s teeth and gums. We expertly scale and polish each tooth, even gently reaching beneath the gum line, and check each gum pocket for disease. Then we apply a special sealant to protect your pet’s teeth from plaque.

Dental surgery involves extracting diseased teeth, which are painful, infected with bacteria, and adversely affecting your pet’s gums, jawbone, and internal organs.

Removing diseased teeth is the only way to “cure” dental disease at the later stages. Dental surgery is more intensive than routine cleaning.

Pets can live healthy, happy, full lives without all their teeth—especially since removing diseased teeth means no more dental pain.

Dental X-rays Are Standard Procedure
Dental x-rays are essential to any professional dental procedure. Only x-rays can reveal hidden issues such as cracked roots, abscesses, lesions, and pockets that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Dental x-rays are crucial in providing your pet comprehensive dental care.

A Note About Anesthesia
Pet dentistry requires full anesthesia to be effective and beneficial. Any anesthetic procedure carries a certain amount of risk. We take every precaution, from initial sedation to recovery, to ensure your pet’s safety. Your surgery vet and surgical support team are always totally focused on your pet.

We use the safest anesthesia drugs and the highest level of technology and equipment. Our highly trained vet assistants perform preoperative blood work, place an IV catheter, and continuously monitor vital signs as best practice.

The cost of dentistry at Eno Animal Hospital also includes antibiotics and comprehensive pain management medications both administered here and sent home with your pet.

A Note About Cost
Since pet dentistry requires full anesthesia, it is more extensive—and therefore expensive—than people dentistry.

Annual dental cleanings actually save money by keeping pets healthier, which prevents more serious, difficult, and expensive problems in the long run.

We recommend dentistry not to make money. We recommend dentistry because it’s the best care for your pet. Dentistry is invaluable to health and happiness!

Fresh breath, strong teeth, healthy gums, healthy heart and lungs and kidneys, a life without pain: Dentistry is definitely worth it.

Did You Know?

Dentistry is such an essential service in the veterinary field that we actually refer to it professionally by a different name: “COHAT.”

COHAT stands for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. Dentistry is truly comprehensive care that does so much good for so many pets. We’re proud COHATs are a core service at Eno because we love helping pets.
